Dear Tedo Friends, please excuse us – we took a February blog hiatus!
Winter may seem quiet on the surface, but it is busy behind the scenes at Quinta do Tedo.
We prepare our annual Spring newsletter and promotion (valid through May 31; details below). We perform annual Tasting Room, B&B and Bistro Terrace maintenance. We plan for the new season with our Team Tedo and partners. We make headway on new projects (stay tuned for our new Casa do Cavalo Tasting Room opening this summer!) We prune and plant our vineyards, flowers, vegetable gardens and orchards. We blend our young wines and bottle our mature wines.
Believe it or not, we also try to take a well-deserved break, to recharge for the new season.
Now, a few days after Spring has officially sprung, I write our March blog as Douro wakes up from its winter slumber to welcome the new vineyard cycle and wine tourism season with sunny days, verdant flora and cheerful birdsong.
What better way to launch into a new season than with a few new products?
Since late 2025, we have released the following new editions of our Quinta do Tedo Portos and Douro DOC wines (accompanied by words from our Head Winemaker, Jorge Alves):
Douro DOC Rosé 2024 – released November 2025 – “grapes with long ripening, vinified in cocciopesto amphorae to create a delicate and deep wine. Great for socialising and sharing with friends and family. A Rosé to enjoy!”
Late Bottled Vintage 2021 – released December 2025 – “an elegant, textured, and complex wine with great aging potential. Enjoy it, now and within 10-15 years of aging.”
Porto Vintage 2023 – released January 2026 – “classic and concentrated, with elegance and focused acidity. Intense ripe fruit and an extraordinary structure." According to Jorge, “an almost immortal Vintage.”
Douro DOC Reserva 2022 – released February 2026 – “harvested during a hot year, resulting in a more concentrated profile. A blend with a greater expression of Touriga Nacional.”
Last but not least, just this week we released our Douro DOC Grande Reserva Savedra 2021 – Jorge’s tasting and production notes summarise the savoir-faire, quality grapes and passion that combine into this most prestigious of our Quinta do Tedo Douro DOC wines:
Tasting notes – “A beautiful, deep ruby color, demonstrating the richness of the year. Complex aromas of black fruits, wild blackberries, cassis and black plum, with nuances of black pepper and wet schist. Elegant cashmere tannins, a silky texture and firm structure with layers of black fruit; deep, full of energy and with great balance between complexity, structure and fresh acidity; beautiful gravity and a long finish with precision and tension. Drink now, or age for 8-10 more years.”
Production notes – “The grapes are a classic Douro blend from our estate’s mature Savedra vineyard (85%) and Touriga Nacional parcel planted in 1997. After hand picking and quality sorting, they are mostly de-stemmed (70%) before macerated pre-fermentation during 24 hours followed by fermentation at a controlled 24-26 degrees Celsius for 5 days with soft pump-overs equal to 2 volumes per day. Malolactic fermentation proceeds in a stainless steel tank before racking to 80% new and 20% used 228 litre French oak barrels for 18 months before bottling in March 2026.”
Some notes of my own – the new French oak, selected by “barrel guru” Vincent Bouchard (Quinta do Tedo Owner who also manages Bouchard Cooperages since the 1980s, and since the early 2020s with next generation Paolo Bouchard), is very well-integrated and adds elegant notes of nutmeg to the bouquet, and freshness, length and tension to the palette of this exceptional Grande Reserva Savedra 2021. It should pair marvellously with duck, lamb and wild mushroom dishes, or more intense cheeses.
