At Quinta do Tedo we have 6 hectares (about 10 acres). Our 800 olive trees are old: a part 50 to 60 years and an another part 80 to 100 years. The main varieties are cordovil, verdial and moleirinha. Given that the Douro valley has a Mediterranean climate with very low yearly rainfall (500mm), and a hot and dry summer, and together with the typical shist soil the olives are very concentrated in flavor. We harvest the olives at the end of November and the olive oil is first press using a cold method of extraction. Our olive oil is known for being soft, smooth, discreet and addictive. Our olive oil shines beautifully in a simple salad of roasted peppers, onions and tomatoes and is a natural to use in slowly stewed onions, garlic, pepper and bay leaf foundations for a variety of Portuguese recipes the olive oil complementing beautifully the ingredients. |
