The Tedo meets the Douro on a rainy day in May.

In March 2012’s blog I wrote that Douro Valley was experiencing the driest winter in 80 years, and 2012 did go down in history as such. Quinta do Tedo’s 2012 rainfall amounted to 27 cm/11”, the norm being 42 cm/17”. To put this in perspective with other viticultural regions that I know, annual rainfall averages 800 cm/31” in Bordeaux, 700 cm/27” in Burgundy and in Chianti and 62 cm/25” in Napa Valley….quite a contrast from what Quinta do Tedo received last year!  Looking at monthly precipitation and temperature reports from AVDID (Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Viticultura Duriense) 2013 is a wet year, as is most of Europe – the cold and wet just are not letting up!  The Cima Corgo (Adorigo), where Quinta do Tedo is located, is 13% below normal at 38 cm/15“ rainfall thus far for 2013, placing this subregion as one of Douro Valley’s drier. Winemaker Jorge still considers this as a “normal” year in rain, the “rainy season” being from November to April.  Other subregions – to include Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo (Pinhão), Douro Superior (Vesuvio and Vilariça) post higher in 2013 rainfall, from 12 to 58% more than average annual precipitation of about 50 cm/20”.

The rainy season temperatures are cooler this year by about 1°C (last year the temperature during this time was 2° to 3° C cooler), a factor to consider in flowering, fruit set, ripening and eventual grape harvesting. While the viticultural rule of thumb for predicting when harvest commences is ”100 days from flowering” this works for viticultural regions that have consistent and predictable temperatures.  The rainy season recently is 1° to 3° C cooler, the summer has more heat waves, so predictable temperatures have departed for the time being.  Summer temperature trends now include uncontrollable 3 to 4 days of +40° C (104° F) heat, that actually burn the grape vines and can damage whole parcels.  Jorge points out that “most problems that we have are associated with temperatures that are higher in the summer” more than amount of precipitation.  Are these extremes are becoming more the norm than the exception?

For The Love Of Port, (FTLOP) a comprehensive Port, Douro wine and Madeira e-newsletter, with a subscriber base spanning 75 countries, granted Quinta do Tedo this award in March.  We thank Roy Hersh, FTLOP’s founder, considered a leading Port wine and Madeira authority in the US.  Roy guides several small groups a year on exclusive insider’s wine and food tours in the Douro region and Madeira, what better way to get to know the region….

Here are choice excerpts from his Quinta do Tedo write up:

“In 2005, during FTLOP’s very first Port Harvest Tour, our guests were introduced to this little known, (at the time) humble Douro property that maintained a 250 year history, adjacent to the Tedo River…. Under the stewardship of Vincent and Kay Steffey Bouchard, who took over this enchanting property in 1992, there has been substantial reinvestment in Quinta do Tedo…and it shows. …The reception and tasting areas are now more attractive and user friendly for guests…The vineyards contain nearly twenty grape varieties in five distinct parcels and have been converted from using sustainable farming to organic farming over the past 3 years.

The Douro wines and Port…are overseen by Jorge Alves, who is a fine winemaker… shares many pearls of wisdom during visits…makes each individual feel like he has known them for years; answering every question lobbed his way, in great detail. He is also happy to share examples of LBV, VP, and Colheitas directly from cask, which is always appreciated…In 2011, Quinta do Tedo added five guest rooms to begin enotourism.  (Quinta do Tedo) has grown from a sleepy Douro property into a name that is now recognized internationally with award winning wines and Ports…I believe the best is yet to come!”

Nous sommes fiers de partager notre premier prix pour l’hospitalité et le tourisme ! The love of Port, (FTLOP), une Newsletter ayant des abonnés dans 75 pays et parlant de façon détaillée du Porto, du vin du Douro et du Madère, a remis à Quinta do Tedo ce prix au mois de mars. Nous remercions Roy Hersh, fondateur de FTLOP, reconnu aux U.S. comme une autorité du vin de Porto et de Madère. Roy guide de nombreux petits groupes chaque année pour des excursions exclusives et initiatiques sur les thèmes du vin et de la gastronomie, dans les régions du Douro et de Madère ; quelle meilleure moyen de connaître ces régions.

« Lors des vendanges 2005, pendant le tout premier tour de FTLOP, nos clients ont découvert cette peu connue (à cette époque) et humble propriété du Douro dont l’histoire remonte à 250 ans, au bord de la rivière du Tedo.

Sous l’intendance de Vincent et Kay Steffey Bouchard qui ont acquis cette ravissante propriété en 1992, de substantiels investissements ont été faits à Quinta do Tedo. Les locaux de réception et de dégustation sont maintenant plus attrayants et conviviaux pour les invités. Le vignoble possède une vingtaine de variétés de cépages, plantés sur 5 parcelles distinctes et ont été converties d’une culture durable à une viticulture biologique lors des 3 dernières années.

Les vins du Douro et les Portos sont sous la supervision de Jorge Alves qui est un fin œnologue. Il partage des trésors de sagesse pendant les visites et s’occupe de chaque visiteur avec soin, répondant à chaque question de manière détaillée. Il est aussi très heureux de partager des pipettes de LBV, Vintage Ports et Colheitas, directement sur fût, ce qui est toujours très apprécié. En 2011, Quinta do Tedo a ajouté 5 chambres d’hôtes pour débuter l’Oenotourisme. Quinta do Tedo a évolué d’une petite propriété endormie du Douro, en un nom qui est maintenant reconnue internationalement, aux vins et Portos médaillés et le meilleur est encore à venir!

Succédant au blog du mois de janvier, relatant les prix et les récompenses attribués à Quinta do Tedo et celui du mois de février concernant le calendrier des événements de promotion, j’aimerais vous faire partager quelques photos prises sur le vif, nous montrant en action pour la promotion de notre Porto et de nos vins sur des expositions, lors de dégustations, etc.….

Tout cela ne revient qu’à faire partager la connaissance de quelque chose pour lequel nous sommes passionnés – Quinta do Tedo. Nos Portos et nos vins Douros DOC requièrent des explications sur la façon dont nous les élaborons et ce qui les différencient de ceux de nos confrères et d’autres vins dans le monde. Cette « tâche » est intense et chronophage, mais aussi notre plaisir, car nous apprécions la curiosité des dégustateurs et leur sourire empourpré lorsqu’ils quittent le stand !

Following January’s blog about Quinta do Tedo’s selected awards and recognitions, and February’s blog about 2013 schedules of events for getting the word out, I would like to share with you some candid photos showing us in action in getting the word out about our port and wine at trade shows, tastings, and etc.

It all boils down to sharing knowledge about something that we are so passionate about – Quinta do Tedo.  Our Ports and Douro DOC table wines do require explanations about how they are made and what makes them different from our competitors and from other wines of the world.  This “work” is intensive and involves long hours, but also a treat for us, as we are appreciative of the tasters’ inquisitiveness and the fact that they leave the stand with a purple smile!

Classements, résultats et médailles des vins sont des valeurs de références ; elles sont des informations à stocker dans les bases de données mémorielles des consommateurs et des amateurs de vins. Elles sont également pour le domaine un moyen de se faire connaître. Ne nous reposant pas sur nos lauriers, nous prêtons attention à la façon dont nous sommes observés par les critiques du vin et comment nous nous positionnons dans les concours. Ceux qui visitent notre domaine ont une première expérience via une visite approfondie suivie d’une dégustation technique ; un succès rencontré dans nos salles de dégustation. Cela contribue à une promotion de Quinta do Tedo par le bouche à oreille. Nous travaillons avec des importateurs fidèles et efficaces qui nous aident à être mieux connus par le biais de leurs circuits de distribution. Wine ratings, scores and awards are reference points; information to add to the memory bank of both the novice wine drinker and the wine aficionado. While not the end-all to our winery’s success, we do care how we are regarded by wine writers and how we stack up in competitions.  They are a way for a winery to become known.  Those who have visited our winery have a first-hand experience via a comprehensive tour followed by a technical tasting, a success reflected in our tasting room sales and word-of-mouth promotion of Quinta do Tedo.  We work with effective and faithful importers, helping us become better known through distribution channels.  Our products are sold in stores by knowledgeable and competent wine staff. We are appreciative of this help; we strive to produce excellent quality products and in return we have wonderful support by those who have visited us and who work with us.  But we also know that the wine consumer looks at scores, ratings and awards; understandable with the sheer number of ports and wines on the market today, that can be daunting when trying to choose a bottle!
